Exploring Padel Through Physical Education : Connecting Knowledge, Skills, and Sporting Experience
Physical Education at NationalHigh Jakarta School continues to develop as an integral part of students’holistic education. In Week 4 of Term 1, the PE Department introduced padel as part of the Physical Education programme, providing students with structured opportunities to develop their understanding of the sport through theoretical knowledge, practical application and reflective learning. Padel is an emerging racket sport that shares characteristics with tennis while offering students a contemporary and engaging approach to physical education.
Padel is a racket sport that shares characteristics with tennis while incorporating its own distinctive rules, court design, equipment, and tactical principles. The sport is generally played in doubles and involves the use of a smaller court surrounded by walls, creating unique opportunities for movement, positioning, and strategic play. Through the PE programme, students are introduced to the fundamental concepts that allow
them to understand and participate in padel effectively.
Students begin by exploring the basic rules and characteristics of the sport, including court dimensions and zones, scoring systems, equipment, serving regulations, and the role of the surrounding walls during gameplay. This theoretical foundation is important in helping students understand why particular techniques and movement patterns are required during a match. Rather than simply learning how to play, students are encouraged to understand the principles behind the sport and how these principles influence decisionmaking and performance.
Students are introduced to fundamental skills and techniques such as racket control, ball tracking, serving, returning, positioning, movement, and shot selection. Through a progressive learning approach, students are given opportunities to practise individually, with partners, and in small groups before applying their skills in modified game situations. This allows students to gradually build confidence while developing their physical
competence and tactical awareness.
The study of padel also provides opportunities for students to develop a wide range of transferable skills. Because the sport requires constant movement, anticipation, communication, and decision-making, students are encouraged to think strategically while responding to changing situations during gameplay. Doubles activities also emphasise teamwork and communication, requiring students to work together, understand positioning, support one another, and make effective decisions as a team.
The introduction of padel represents another step towards developing a modern, relevant, and engaging Physical Education curriculum at NationalHigh Jakarta School. By exposing students to emerging sports and combining academic learning with practical participation, the programme encourages them to become more knowledgeable, confident, and independent participants in physical activity.
